Japanese investment company Metaplanet acquired 2,823 Bitcoin between April and July 2026, spending about 35.9 billion yen ($222 million) on the purchase. The average price of a coin was 12.7 million yen ($78,608), and the company’s combined holdings reached 43,000 BTC - the third largest corporate holder of first cryptocurrency. The total value of Metaplanet’s Bitcoin reserves today is estimated at 659.2 billion ($4.07 billion).
Crypto purchases have slowed: while the company acquired 17,473 BTC in the third quarter of 2025, it acquired 5,075 BTC in the first quarter of 2026 and only 2,823 coins in the second quarter. Despite this, Metaplanet has confirmed its accumulation strategy: the plan calls for reserves to reach 100,000 BTC by the end of 2026 and 210,000 BTC by the end of 2027. The average purchase price of one Bitcoin for all purchases is 15.3 million yen ($94,792).
In the second quarter, Metaplanet reported $10.95 million in revenue from the Bitcoin Income Generation program, which uses Bitcoin options to generate additional revenue. The company’s shares rose 3.5% on the Japanese stock exchange and 2.42% on the US over-the-counter market after publication of the report. Recall that in the first quarter, Metaplanet recorded a loss of 114.5 billion yen ($725.6 million) due to the decline in the exchange rate of Bitcoin.
