Microsoft has quietly added a new OneDrive Photos application to the Windows 11 operating system. The program automatically appeared in the Start menu on millions of personal computers without prior warning to users. The situation also affected corporate machines running a special edition of Windows 11 Enterprise. The situation is aggravated by the fact that OneDrive Photos works exclusively with personal Microsoft accounts. Organizations using Entra corporate accounts have received an application that is completely inaccessible to them. Representatives of the IT departments express serious dissatisfaction with this policy of software distribution. Automatic installation takes place in the background during regular system updates. Users discover the new icon quite unexpectedly for themselves. Such actions by the tech giant cause noticeable irritation among the professional community. Administrators of corporate networks are forced to spend extra time solving problems. The lack of transparency in software distribution undermines the credibility of the operating system manufacturer. Large organizations are particularly sensitive to unauthorized changes in the work environment.

Experts note that it is almost impossible to get rid of OneDrive Photos using standard tools. The application is not installed as a regular package from the Microsoft Store. The program is hidden inside the OneDrive client's folder as a file OneDrive App exe. You cannot delete it separately without completely uninstalling the entire cloud client. Thousands of organizations actively use OneDrive for daily document management. Blocking the application through Windows Group policies also fails. The shortcut is returned after each regular OneDrive client update. A temporary solution was a special PowerShell script to remove only shortcuts. The script removes icons from the Start menu and desktop without touching the executable files. However, after the next OneDrive update, the shortcuts reappear. The cleaning procedure has to be repeated after each release of the cloud client. IT administrators have to constantly monitor the appearance of new versions of the application. This situation creates an additional burden on the technical departments of companies. Developers of third-party solutions create their own tools to combat the imposed software.

The OneDrive Photos app itself is a special wrapper over the web version of the gallery. The program offers the function of indexing the user's local photos on the computer. A special Moments mode is available with a random selection of old pictures. The People section uses artificial intelligence technology to group photos by face. The application displaces the standard Photography program in the second place in the Windows search. Functionally, OneDrive Photos almost completely duplicates the built-in system solution. Users receive two almost identical image viewing programs. Such duplication raises questions about the appropriateness of such an approach by developers. Corporate clients expect more flexible settings for the installed software. The ability to completely disable unnecessary components remains an important business requirement. Industry representatives continue to discuss best practices for software distribution. Transparency of the actions of operating system manufacturers is becoming a critical factor. Market participants are closely following the policies of large technology companies. The balance between commercial interests and user convenience requires constant attention.
