This update is part of the strategic plan to improve the platform's performance, which is scheduled to be implemented in March 2026. The official minimum system requirements of Windows 11 are only 4 GB, but practical recommendations for comfortable work and gaming previously indicated the need for 16 GB or even 32 GB. The current global shortage of memory modules is forcing both end users and hardware manufacturers to return to using more affordable DDR4 memory and reducing basic configurations. In this regard, the company includes optimization of resource consumption in an expanded package of changes, which also covers acceleration of initial system configuration, modernization of parental control functions and improvement of voice control mechanisms.

This initiative is dictated by the difficult situation in the hardware market, where experts predict the gradual disappearance of budget personal computers by 2028. Already today, leading manufacturers, including Apple, are returning laptops with 8 GB of RAM to their product lines to keep products in certain price segments. For Microsoft, keeping Windows 11 stable on such configurations is of critical strategic importance. Poor performance on limited hardware can trigger user migration to alternative platforms such as macOS or Linux distributions. A historical precedent has already taken place: after adjustments in support for Windows 10, there was an increase in sales of Apple devices, as part of the audience preferred to change the ecosystem. In addition, Valve's active development of its SteamOS operating system, which is positioned as a more lightweight and responsive alternative, creates additional competitive pressure on traditional solutions.
