Moonshot AI Plans IPO in Hong Kong Valued at $50 Billion

Moonshot AI has completed a funding round with a valuation of $50 billion, according to Bloomberg. The Beijing-based startup plans to go public in Hong Kong in early 2027. The company has rapidly scaled its rounds: at the end of 2025, it was valued at approximately $4.3 billion, in May 2026 it raised over $2 billion at a valuation of $20 billion, and in July 2026 it secured $3.5 billion at a post-money valuation of $35 billion. The total capital raised now exceeds $5.5 billion. Investors include Alibaba, Tencent, and China Mobile.

Moonshot has confidentially filed for a listing in Hong Kong aiming to raise around $3 billion. Among the underwriters are Goldman Sachs, CICC, and Deutsche Bank. Bloomberg indicates early 2027, but the window could open as early as late 2026. The hype is primarily driven by Kimi, the company's family of large language models. The flagship Kimi K3 was released in July 2026 with 2.8 trillion parameters and a context window of 1 million tokens, making it the largest open-weight model in the world. Open-weight means that developers can download and run the model independently, rather than just renting access via an API. Moonshot's annual recurring revenue reached approximately $300 million by June 2026, up from around $200 million in April. The current valuation exceeds 160 times the annual revenue.

The company's founder, Yang Zhilin, is a former Tsinghua professor and a researcher at Google. Moonshot is not the only player at the top of this market: DeepSeek is valued at approximately $74 billion, and Z AI at around $66 billion. The reaction to Kimi K3 has reportedly spurred preliminary talks with Microsoft, Amazon, and Google regarding potential revenue-sharing agreements. This will be the first instance of a Chinese AI company engaging in such discussions with major American cloud providers.
