Amid disappointing statistics - Firefox’s share of the desktop market has fallen from nearly 6% to 3.79% over the past year - Mozilla has presented a comprehensive roadmap for its flagship product. The calling card of the upcoming changes is a new mascot: a cute lyse named Kit who will accompany users.
The main focus of the developers was on convenience and multimedia. The browser will have an updated Nova interface, tab grouping on mobile devices and long-awaited custom hotkeys. Mozilla will also turn Firefox into a full-fledged tool for working with documents, adding the ability to split, merge and sort PDF files. The real gift for filmmakers will be full support of HDR video on Windows and Linux, which the community has been waiting for more than six years, as well as experimental work with the format JPEG XL in the 152nd version.
The integration of the neural network was not necessary. The browser will include "Quick Answers" with voice control. However, Mozilla emphasizes that unlike its competitors, it will retain full control over the selection and operation of local language models.
On the mobile front, major changes are coming. Firefox will include a built-in VPN, and iPhone owners will finally get an automatic ad and tracker lock. The previously limited iOS version due to the ban on third-party extensions was its weak point, but new features should make Mozilla’s browser much more competitive in the Apple ecosystem.
