The American space agency NASA has officially announced the conclusion of the MAVEN (Mars Atmosphere and Volatile EvolutioN) mission, marking the end of its pioneering 11-year orbital journey around the Red Planet. Launched in November 2013, this was the agency's first dedicated endeavor to study the Martian upper atmosphere, its ionosphere, and how they interact with the Sun to understand why the planet's atmosphere escapes into space.

The mission's termination follows a prolonged period of silence after the spacecraft unexpectedly lost contact on December 6 of last year while passing behind Mars. Despite ongoing recovery attempts that were publicly acknowledged by the agency in December 2025, an anomaly review board convened in February concluded that the orbiter is completely unrecoverable and incapable of resuming its scientific and data-relay operations.

While the final anomaly report detailing the exact cause of the communication failure will be published later this year, the mission's scientific legacy remains fully intact. Over its more than decade-long lifespan, MAVEN provided crucial insights into the historical evolution of the Martian atmosphere and climate, giving researchers a profound understanding of the planet's past water reserves and its potential to support life.
