Nvidia has announced plans to invest one billion five hundred million dollars in SB Energy, a developer backed by SoftBank. SB Energy is building a data center campus in Pike County, Ohio. OpenAI has already leased this center for twenty years to launch its artificial intelligence initiatives. According to a statement from Nvidia’s press service, this investment makes the chip manufacturer a shareholder in SB Energy alongside SoftBank Group and OpenAI. SB Energy will build, own, and operate the data center, and OpenAI will become the main tenant. The campus is located on the site of the former Portsmouth Gaseous Diffusion Plant — a Cold War‑era uranium enrichment facility that is now being redeveloped. In its statement, OpenAI said it has agreed to allocate about eight gigawatts of IT capacity at the site, which the partners call PORTS‑Pike. The company will directly cover the costs of electricity and infrastructure, and SB Energy has promised that the network upgrade will not affect the bills of other consumers in Ohio.
Nvidia’s press release states that it will provide credit support for the acquisition of land, electricity, and the construction of a building framework to ensure initial capacity of four point two‑five gigawatts of IT infrastructure, with the possibility of expanding to an additional three point seven five gigawatts. Nvidia founder and CEO Jensen Huang stated that in the era of artificial intelligence, land, electricity, and infrastructure have become vital resources. According to him, the company is providing long‑term infrastructure for computing power so that OpenAI can deploy the most productive AI factories. The website will run exclusively on the Nvidia DSX platform, which includes graphics and central processors, as well as network components. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman added that the project will give millions of people access to artificial intelligence to solve problems ranging from finding new medicines to starting a business.
The need for energy remains a top priority. Power figures depend on electricity production, which currently exists only on paper. SB Energy and SoftBank plan to build at least ten gigawatts of new power plants to create eight gigawatts of capacity for the IT sector, and also to invest at least four point two billion dollars in regional grid infrastructure as part of a partnership with AEP Ohio. Development will be carried out in stages: the first eight hundred megawatts are expected to be commissioned in 2028. To limit water consumption, the center will use closed‑loop air cooling systems. Partners position the project as a driver of job creation: it is expected to create approximately thirty‑five thousand construction jobs by 2032 and two thousand five hundred permanent positions. OpenAI will also add forty million dollars to the regional development fund, bringing it to eighty million, and provide eighty‑four million dollars in loans to eight hundred and forty‑four thousand college students in Ohio, with one hundred dollars each. The total benefit to the local community will exceed one hundred and sixty million dollars.
