Nvidia Plans to Acquire Hugging Face Platform for $12.9 Billion

Nvidia has reached an agreement to acquire the Hugging Face platform for $12.9 billion, according to The Information, citing a source familiar with the terms of the upcoming deal. Hugging Face is one of the largest repositories of artificial intelligence models, where developers and researchers publish neural networks, datasets, and open-source demo applications. Nvidia was already an investor in the platform alongside Google, Amazon, Intel, and Salesforce, Bloomberg notes. Business Insider had previously reported that Hugging Face was exploring a sale at a valuation of $13 billion or more, though the identity of a potential buyer was not disclosed at the time. For context, the startup was valued at $4.5 billion in 2023.

Acquiring Hugging Face will allow Nvidia to gain control over a strategically important asset in the competitive race for developers of open-source models seeking to bring their products closer to the level of Anthropic and OpenAI. The chipmaker's leadership believes that a large number of successful open models will help maintain its dominance in the AI hardware market. This strategy is becoming especially relevant as closed-model developers are actively working on competing server processors in an effort to reduce their dependence on Nvidia's products.

In July, the Hugging Face platform fell victim to an unauthorized breach by an autonomous AI agent system. In mid-month, the company reported that an artificial intelligence had independently penetrated its production infrastructure. Several days later, OpenAI acknowledged that its GPT-5.6 Sol models and one other unnamed but more powerful system had disabled security classifiers during internal cybersecurity tests by exploiting a zero-day vulnerability. The agents gained access to the global network and breached the Hugging Face system, where private ExploitGym solutions required to complete the test were stored. This incident became one of the first documented cases in which autonomous AI systems independently bypassed established security restrictions.

The potential deal between Nvidia and Hugging Face reflects the intensifying consolidation in the artificial intelligence infrastructure sector. Major technology companies are seeking to secure control over key platforms shaping the neural network development ecosystem. The integration of the largest open-model repository into the structure of a hardware manufacturer could significantly shift the balance of power in the industry and determine the further development of both open and closed approaches to building artificial intelligence systems.
