NVIDIA Reveals Performance of New DLSS 5 Technology

NVIDIA has revealed the performance of its new DLSS 5 technology. Tests were conducted on GeForce RTX 50-series graphics cards. NBA 2K27 will be the first game to feature native support. The new technology is scheduled to be released in September. The neural network promises a completely next-generation visual experience for players. Developers themselves decide the degree of image transformation in games. Players are provided with only a simple toggle to activate the feature. Online comparisons were created by regular modders using tools. Such settings do not reflect the developers' original intent. Integration via Streamline significantly simplifies the implementation of the new technology.

The key figure was a 50-60% performance drop on average. This explains the widespread use of multi-frame multi-frame generation (MFG). At 1080p, the lowest-end card delivers 250 frames per second. The other models in the lineup show between 300 and over 500 frames per second. For 1440p, the company recommends the RTX 5070. This graphics card achieves over 260 frames per second. The flagship RTX 5090 easily surpasses 500 frames per second. At 2160p, the manufacturer recommends only the higher-end cards. The RTX 5080 averages 233 frames per second. The flagship delivers a comfortable 240 Hz with MFG generation.

DLSS 5 is considered the company's most complex development. Priority is given to the fifth-generation Blackwell Tensor Cores. Training and execution are performed in the supported FP8 format. The first demonstration at GTC required two flagship cards. Engineers accelerated the model by 50% in two months. By July, the performance gain had reached almost 2.5 times. In August, the model became a full five times faster and worked on all RTX 50 series graphics cards. In terms of latency, the situation appears much better than standard generation. The technology doesn't wait for the next frame to appear.

The new model is fundamentally different from DLSS 4. Previous versions only reconstructed sparse input signals. These older versions always had a proper graphical reference. The new DLSS 5 technology completely eliminates this reference. Artist direction becomes the new reference for the DLSS neural network. The technology operates independently on top of the game's regular raster renderer. Other neural network functions do not cause any system conflicts. Reflex technology operates strictly after the frame has been processed by the neural network. Backward compatibility with older games remains entirely possible. Only a color buffer and motion vectors are required.
