OKX’s X Layer launches Exchange OS for custom crypto markets

OKX’s EVM-compatible Layer 2 blockchain X Layer has launched Exchange OS, a protocol upgrade that lets developers, institutions and ecosystem teams build their own trading venues. The infrastructure supports spot markets, perpetuals and outcome markets on a shared exchange stack.

The main goal is to reduce fragmentation in onchain finance. Today, builders often have to choose between relying on centralized infrastructure or rebuilding complex systems for matching, margining, liquidations, settlement and risk management from scratch. Exchange OS moves these core exchange functions closer to the protocol layer while still allowing teams to customize market design, structure, controls and compliance.

For traders, the system could offer a unified account and margin layer across different market types. A single view on AI, macro events, sports or tokenized assets could be expressed through several market structures while using the same pool of capital.

The first venue will be 2026 World Cup Outcomes, a simulated outcome market scheduled to launch in June. Broader access to Exchange OS will roll out gradually through XIP-Exchange OS. If successful, OKX could turn X Layer from a standard L2 into infrastructure for custom exchanges and prediction markets.
