Only 9 of the 50 largest altcoins have managed to outperform Bitcoin since its historic peak in October last year. For many years, investing in altcoins was considered a lucrative investment, allowing for greater returns while taking on more risks than investing in Bitcoin. However, as recent statistics from Glassnode show, accurately identifying which altcoins can outperform BTC remains a challenging task. The leader in returns was Zcash (ZEC), which demonstrated an increased return of nearly 14.5 times compared to Bitcoin. In second place was the HYPE token, with a return of about 2.9x. Following are XMR and NEAR with increases of 2.6x and 2.1x, respectively. Thus, 41 out of 50 altcoins failed to outperform Bitcoin, although this does not mean they lost money in dollar terms. This situation highlights the potential opportunity cost of switching investments from Bitcoin to riskier altcoins.
Interestingly, Glassnode data also shows that over the past week, more than 72% of tracked altcoins outperformed Bitcoin, while in August this figure was only 39%. Despite a 21% increase in the market capitalization of altcoins over the month, the share of altcoins compared to Bitcoin remained negative at -0.9%. This indicates that while altcoins increased their capitalization in dollar terms, they failed to significantly gain market share from Bitcoin.
Thus, the current situation in the altcoin market underscores the complexities associated with making investment decisions. The mere expectation that some altcoins will outperform Bitcoin does not relieve the need to carefully analyze which specific altcoins may prove successful. As the number of altcoins actively competing with Bitcoin increases, this task is expected to become even more challenging, but it also creates new opportunities for investors.
