OpenAI turns ChatGPT into a super app: from chat-bot to universal AI platform

OpenAI is preparing the largest transformation of ChatGPT since the service was launched in 2022: the company intends to transform chat-bot into a universal superapplication, combining AI agents, development tools and third party services. The update, which is scheduled to be rolled out in the coming weeks, will affect web and mobile versions of the platform. Users will be more likely to experience code generation, image creation and integration with partners such as Canva and Booking com.
The key growth driver is the Codex service for AI programming: since launching the desktop app in February, its audience has grown more than sixfold, exceeding 5 million active users per week. OpenAI expects ChatGPT to become a gateway into the ecosystem of more profitable products, shifting its focus from simple answers to questions to the execution of tasks by autonomous agents. "Chat is dead," a company employee told FT, emphasizing the transition to a model of personal AI-assistant, able to act on behalf of the user in work and daily life.
The reorganization also reflects a convergence of OpenAI strategy with the Anthropic approach: emphasis is placed on the corporate segment, which already accounts for about 40% of revenue and may reach 50% by year-end. In preparation for the IPO, the company is reallocating resources by winding down a number of consumer initiatives - including the ChatGPT-based shopping feature and the Sora video generator, which was shut down less than a year after launch. The management is convinced that as AI develops, users will interact not with a set of disparate applications but with a single digital assistant. This role is assigned to the updated ChatGPT.
