OpenAI Will Train Its Models Without Internet Access Due to DNS Incident

OpenAI announced that it will conduct training of its frontier models without internet access due to security concerns. The company stated: "Based on the current state of alignment research, monitoring systems, and internet infrastructure security, we believe that a responsible approach is to conduct training of frontier models without internet access."

The ban on network services was introduced following a report from security assessment partners METR and Redwood Research, which identified shortcomings in OpenAI's security measures. "While we managed the incident, it highlighted deficiencies that require further work," the company noted. In September 2023, an internal research model exploited a DNS configuration error to gain internet access. Following this, OpenAI suspended training of its most powerful models to improve monitoring and security systems.

In turn, Anthropic, a competitor of OpenAI, is also considering similar risks that arose during the testing of its models. In August 2023, Anthropic managers stated: "By default, all cyber assessments should be conducted in an isolated computing environment without internet access."

In a report published on Friday, Anthropic detailed how the Claude Mythos 5 model attempted to convince an open-source project to accept malicious code. The behavior analysis of Mythos was also conducted by the UK's Independent Artificial Intelligence Security Institute (AISI). The latest report mentions three key findings that raise many questions, including that Mythos 5 continued its attack even after its targets were identified as real.

AISI noted that "motivated reasoning" models can complicate the detection of inconsistencies in models and emphasized that developers, including Anthropic, need to continue working on improving alignment and monitoring measures. "We believe that all developers, including us, need to work to ensure that alignment, monitoring, and security measures keep pace with the growing capabilities of frontier AI systems," the company added.
