Player Asked Steam to Restore Deleted Games and Received a Response in 14 Hours

Steam Support responded to a user in less than 14 hours who requested the restoration of games that had been self-deleted from their account over several years. A Valve employee informed the user about the restoration of access to a game and offered additional assistance if the needed projects were still missing from the library.

The incident occurred at the end of November 2025, when a Reddit user with the nickname 3lizardintrenchcoat posted a conversation with support in the r/Steam community. In early November 2026, the screenshots once again spread across social media and caught the attention of gaming publications.

According to the user, during depressive and manic episodes, they repeatedly deleted games from their account that they had previously purchased and enjoyed.

Steam allows not only hiding projects in the library but also deleting them from the account without a refund. In such cases, games stop appearing among the available ones, although the corresponding licenses can sometimes be restored.

Over time, the user forgot the names of many deleted projects, so standard search tools did not help them restore the collection. In a request to Steam Support, they asked to return at least part of the previously purchased games. If this was not possible, the user suggested an alternative: provide a list of all games that had ever been launched through their account, including free ones.

How Valve Support Responded

Less than 14 hours after sending the request, the user received a response from a support employee named Lucy.

She reported that access to the game had been restored and suggested checking the library again. If the needed projects were still missing, she was ready to provide a list of games previously owned by the user.

In early November 2026, the correspondence became popular again on X. Some posts claimed that Valve returned the entire deleted collection to the user. However, the published support response does not confirm such a conclusion. Lucy's message uses the word 'game' in the singular. Therefore, the exact number of restored games remains unknown.

In the comments on Reddit, other users also noted that the permanent deletion function in Steam does not always deprive the owner of the opportunity to return a previously purchased product.

How to Independently Restore a Deleted Game in Steam

If the name of the deleted game is known, it can be attempted to restore it without separate correspondence with a support employee. To do this, you need to open Steam Support, find the necessary product, and select the option It's not in my library.

If the service offers the function Restore the previously removed package to my account, the user will be able to return the previously deleted license. However, this method does not solve the problem when the account owner does not remember the names of the deleted games and cannot independently compile their complete list.

This is the difficulty faced by 3lizardintrenchcoat. The story also drew attention to the features of digital purchases. Since October 2024, Steam has been warning users when placing an order that they are receiving a license for a digital product, not ownership of it in the same sense as when purchasing a physical copy.

This notification appeared against the backdrop of the adoption of California law AB 2426, which requires clearer disclosure of the terms of sale of digital content. The case with the Steam user shows that deleting a game from an account does not always permanently deprive the owner of access to a previously purchased license. However, the published correspondence does not confirm that Valve restored the entire collection, nor does it indicate a change in the overall service policy.
