XRP Ledger Developers Plan to Achieve Quantum Resistance by 2028

XRP Ledger (XRPL) developers are discussing the transition of the ledger to post-quantum resistance. XRP Ledger Foundation contributor and decentralized Unique Node List (dUNL) validator known as Vet outlined a proposed timeline on September 9 in a post on X: testing and hybrid deployment of new security protocols in 2027, with a possible mainnet migration in 2028. None of these dates have been confirmed by an official roadmap, amendment proposal, technical specification, or validator vote.

The proposed timeline would place XRPL's possible transition one year ahead of the benchmark being discussed for Ethereum. The 2029 Ethereum deadline is a personal estimate by researcher Justin Drake, not a commitment approved by network governance. A calendar comparison alone does not establish which network has advanced further in engineering, testing, or security auditing.

Regarding the technical aspects of the migration, Vet highlighted three points. The first is the built-in RegularKey mechanism, which allows a replacement signing key to be assigned without changing the public address. However, this is not equivalent to full quantum protection: the master key derived from the original credentials can be disabled but not replaced. A full migration would need to address master keys, multisignatures, transaction verification, validator operations, and all publicly disclosed keys.

The second is the proposed "Quantum-Day" emergency response mechanism mentioned by Vet. There is no approved amendment by that name in XRPL's public documentation, and the conditions for its activation, account restrictions, and recovery procedure have not been described. Until those details are published, the mechanism remains an attributed concept rather than a confirmed network feature.

The third is active testing of quantum-resistant algorithms. The new security protocols are planned to be deployed in a hybrid manner, running in parallel with the existing system, which would allow protection to be scaled without disrupting network operations.
