BlackRock's Head of Digital Assets Robert Mitchnik shared his view on the reasons behind Bitcoin's recent price surge above the $81,000 mark. In his assessment, the rally in the leading cryptocurrency is linked to macroeconomic factors, particularly the dynamics of the US national debt. As of August 18, the size of the American national debt stood at $40.05 trillion, more than double the figure from a decade ago.
Mitchnik noted that government spending exceeds revenues, forcing authorities to borrow funds to cover the budget deficit. According to the BlackRock executive, Bitcoin's recent rebound fits a pattern of asset movement that has repeated itself for many years. The leading cryptocurrency often demonstrates recovery during periods when investor confidence in traditional financial instruments weakens. Growing national debt, large-scale borrowing, and persistent deficits may become a long-term structural feature of global financial markets.
As a result, many investors are paying closer attention to the purchasing power of fiat currencies and are seeking alternative ways to preserve their savings. In Mitchnik's view, investors regard Bitcoin as a hedge against dollar devaluation. BlackRock's Head of Digital Assets expressed confidence that Bitcoin will continue to post gains regardless of the attention paid to the CLARITY legislative initiative. In his assessment, regulatory clarity is needed to a greater extent by the decentralized finance (DeFi) segment, while Bitcoin has long received broad recognition from international regulators. Mitchnik believes that market participants are no longer pricing the fate of CLARITY into their base-case scenario for BTC's price movement.
