SoFi Launches Tokenized Deposit Product SOFIE

SoFi has introduced a tokenized deposit product called SOFIE, which represents money held in SoFi Bank and offers the option to convert into the stablecoin SoFiUSD. It was announced on Thursday that each SOFIE corresponds to one dollar on deposit at SoFi Bank.

The product advertises an annual interest rate of 4.40%, which depends on product requirements and changing rate conditions. Manual deposit insurance applies according to the described conditions for bank deposits. Thus, SOFIE offers convenience for consumers who can earn interest income while remaining a step away from blockchain transfers.

Conversion of SOFIE to SoFiUSD is carried out at a 1:1 rate. However, it is important to note that these instruments should not be considered legally identical, as deposit insurance applies only under conditions set for bank deposits and does not extend to all tokens or transactions on the public blockchain.

While stablecoins have become widely used instruments for settlements, interest-bearing products raise new questions related to regulation and design. A bank deposit generates income based on the rules of banking institutions, whereas a freely circulating payment token does not always provide similar rights. This creates an interesting competitive challenge for crypto exchanges, as users can leave their currency on deposit while simultaneously gaining the opportunity to invest in digital assets.

Thus, SoFi aims to reduce the amount of funds typically held on crypto exchanges in favor of a regulated banking product that offers both convenience and protection.

The launch of the SOFIE product highlights SoFi's attempts to separate interest-bearing deposits from the token used for fund transfers. This move demonstrates how one of the fintech banks in the US is adapting its strategies for the market, considering the growing interest in stablecoins and the digital economy. According to the company, deposit insurance applies under conditions consistent with bank deposits, creating an additional level of confidence for consumers considering the use of tokenized deposits in conjunction with cryptocurrency transfers.
