Dwarf Fortress Creator Criticizes the Integration of Neural Networks into the Gaming Industry

The gaming industry is going through a period of serious economic contradictions and technological transformations. Video games are generating more money than ever before in history. Global market revenue has surpassed two hundred billion dollars. This figure was recorded at the end of 2025. At the same time, studios have continued to shut down en masse for several years running. Staff layoffs have become background noise in the news cycle. The consequences of generative artificial intelligence have added to the existing problems. The industry is actively promoting the idea of a bright technological future. Billion-dollar investments in data centers have hit developers hard. Prices for components and memory have risen sharply. These factors are affecting both studios and ordinary players.

Tarn Adams spoke with PC Gamer at an exhibition. The gamescom 2026 event served as the venue for an important interview. The creator of Dwarf Fortress shared his views on the future of the entire industry. The developer considers the current economic model to be fundamentally unsustainable. Executives are trying to get the boss to press a special button. That button, as envisioned, is supposed to produce finished video games. Everyone else is expected to buy the product without having a job. Adams sees nothing sustainable in this model. The developer anticipates an inevitable collapse and the reckoning that follows. The problem affects the entire technology sector as a whole. Reporting on the use of neural networks has become the norm. Work commits are now under close scrutiny from management.

Management is gradually falling into a genuine technological psychosis. Executives are actively asking about the use of neural networks in code. Managers are dissatisfied with employees who don't use artificial intelligence. Those in charge believe machines will handle all the work. Adams compared the situation to a Dead Kennedys song. The developer recalled the story of his own father being laid off from a factory. His father worked as a computer specialist at a wastewater treatment plant. Management simply did not understand the nature of his complex work. The plant ultimately lost its own company entirely. Adams described the whole situation as the same old recurring nonsense. Managers routinely underestimate the work of specialists they don't understand. Generative artificial intelligence has only amplified this negative effect.

Managers see a result that imitates work they don't understand. From this comes the false belief that the process can be scaled. They trust that the quality of the final product will be maintained. Research into the psychological effects of neural networks is being conducted in earnest. Senior executives are also susceptible to the influence of new technologies. Some industry figures fail to understand why there is so much negativity. People are actively criticizing the widespread adoption of artificial intelligence. Adams himself takes an ironic view of the terminological side of things. The developer was forced to change his vocabulary when describing his own game. The hype surrounding neural networks made him alter his familiar terminology. Tarn Adams now has to talk about the behavior of digital dwarves. The developer can no longer use the term artificial intelligence. The dwarves simply behave poorly in certain in-game situations. Other studios, by contrast, are making very active use of neural networks in their development work.
