Sui implements post-quantum signature algorithms to protect the network from quantum threats

L1-Sui blockchain has announced the introduction of two digital signature schemes that are resistant to quantum computing. This update is part of a long-term strategy to ensure the security of the network, user accounts and smart contracts from potential threats associated with the development of quantum technologies.

The update is based on algorithms standardized by the US National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST). The ML-DSA-65 scheme will be used for regular user accounts. The SLH-DSA-SHA2-128s algorithm is being implemented for objects and storages managed by smart contracts. The development team notes that using two different cryptographic approaches allows you to diversify risks and increase the overall reliability of the system, since each scheme is based on its own mathematical apparatus.

Most of the technical work on implementation and testing has already been completed. According to the published roadmap, support for quantum-stable storage for smart contracts will be integrated into the main network by the end of 2026. Testing of support for ML-DSA-65 signed accounts in the testnet is scheduled for the end of 2026. The full launch of post-quantum authentication for user accounts on the main network is expected in the first quarter of 2027. Along with the introduction of new security standards, updates for wallets, software development kits (SDKs), and command-line tools (CLIs) will be released. Independent code security audits are currently underway.
