Taiwan's economy showed solid growth in the second quarter of 2026, growing by 12.92 percent year-on-year. According to the state statistical agency, this indicator significantly exceeded the consensus forecast of analysts, which was at the level of 10.8 percent. Although the pace of economic expansion has slowed compared to the record high of 14.55 percent in the first quarter, which was the highest in the last five decades, the current dynamics confirm the region's stable macroeconomic trajectory.
The main driver of economic development is the island's key position in the global supply chain of artificial intelligence technologies. Taiwan actively serves the needs of technology giants such as Nvidia and Apple, relying on the production facilities of Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC), the world's largest contract semiconductor manufacturer. This trend was confirmed by data from the Ministry of Finance, according to which exports in the second quarter increased by 43.7 percent year-on-year, reaching 220.93 billion dollars.
Amid strong export performance, analysts expect Taiwan's central bank to maintain current interest rates at its upcoming September meeting, prioritizing macroeconomic stability. Earlier, in May, the statistical agency had already revised its macroeconomic forecasts upward, increasing the estimate of economic growth for the whole of 2026 from 7.71 to 9.64 percent. This revision was directly driven by the unprecedented expansion of the artificial intelligence sector and related high-tech industries.
