Thailand to Restrict Access to Bitget Exchange from December 5

The Securities and Exchange Commission of Thailand (SEC) announced on November 5 the preparation to block the cryptocurrency exchange Bitget starting December 5, 2026. The regulator has filed a criminal complaint against BG Limited, the platform's operator, on suspicion of providing digital asset trading services without the necessary license.

The materials have been forwarded to the Thai police's Economic Crime Suppression Division. The complaint also involves another individual suspected by the SEC of facilitating the promotion of the exchange's services. At this stage, it concerns the initiation of a legally prescribed procedure, not a court-established criminal liability.

According to the SEC's investigation, from 2022 to 2025, Bitget provided users with cryptocurrency trading services, charged fees, and promoted the platform within Thailand. Among the identified circumstances, the regulator noted the use of the Thai language on the website, the display of asset prices in local currency, and the promotion of services through social media.

According to the SEC, these actions collectively meet the criteria of a cryptocurrency exchange activity, which requires a license under Thailand's 2018 digital asset legislation. The regulator believes that BG Limited conducted such activities without the necessary authorization.

Simultaneously, the SEC notified Thailand's Ministry of Digital Economy and Society of the need to restrict access to Bitget. The measure applies to the exchange's main website, related domains, and mobile application. The start of the blockade is scheduled for December 5, 2026.

The ministry's powers are provided by the 2025 legislative amendments aimed at combating technological crimes. They allow restricting access to cryptocurrency platforms operating without a local license. However, the blockade in Thailand does not automatically mean the cessation of Bitget's activities in other countries.

The regulator recommended that users holding digital assets on Bitget resolve related issues before the restrictions come into effect. The specific course of action depends on the platform's terms of service.

Further criminal proceedings will include an investigation, the prosecutor's decision on possible charges, and, if necessary, a court hearing. A final decision on criminal liability has not yet been made.
