Developer Humza Khalid has created a free 12VHPWR Guard utility using the Claude artificial intelligence model. The program is designed to monitor the current strength at the graphics card power connector and automatically turn off the system when an overload is detected. The main supported models are the ASUS ROG Astral GeForce RTX 5080 and RTX 5090, as well as the ASUS ROG Matrix RTX 4090 and 5090, which are equipped with separate current sensors on each pin of the connector.
The 12V-2x6 connector is a modified version of the 12VHPWR connector. The change in physical dimensions is aimed at ensuring a complete connection of the contacts, but the basic design of the contact points remains, which leaves a certain risk of overheating. The utility polls the I2C bus of the graphics card twice per second. The default trigger threshold is set to a value above 9.5 amps for 15 seconds, after which the program forcibly shuts down the operating system. The parameters of the maximum current and load duration can be changed by the user.
The application takes up about 35 MB of RAM and requires a Python 3.10 or higher environment. It supports operation in Windows 10 and 11 operating systems, logging in Windows Event Viewer, as well as monitoring via HWiNFO shared memory in the absence of direct access to the I2C bus. The developer notes that using this software does not replace the need to physically verify the correct installation of the graphics card's power connector.
