Time media company has initiated a strategic shift by starting to place ad blocks optimized exclusively for perception by artificial intelligence, rather than a human audience. The first clients of this initiative were Ally Bank and the Project Management Institute. The foundation of this approach was the publisher's decision to convert all web pages from HTML format to markdown. This simplified text structure, devoid of complex design elements and images, significantly increases readability for AI systems and autonomous agents, increasing the likelihood of content entering the responses of generative search engines.
To monetize the growing volume of bot traffic, without waiting for the final conclusions about the preservation of traditional search coverage, Time has entered into a partnership agreement with the Mobian technology platform. This collaboration provides both technical page conversion and the generation of the advertising materials themselves. The content intended for AI agents is designed in the form of structured FAQ format blocks containing information about the brand and clearly marked as sponsored material. Representatives of Time and Mobian emphasize that this is the first precedent in the media industry when a publisher purposefully places ads exclusively for machine consumption.
Time's commercial department focuses on brands that have already adapted their corporate websites to the markdown format, as these companies are the ones that are most actively exploring methods of interacting with AI bots. According to Mobian, about 15 percent of brands already use their own markdown pages, and this figure will grow as the concept of a two-tier Internet develops. The logic of this scheme is based on a chain of influence: an AI agent reads the sponsorship block, indexes the data, and subsequently uses it to generate responses for end users. In this way, brands gain indirect control over the narrative generated by large language models, achieving a scale of impact that is many times greater than the capabilities of traditional advertising campaigns.
