The US Department of Energy has announced its intention to build a fully functional quantum computer for scientific computation within three years.
As Deputy Minister of Science Dario Gil announced at the SCAC meeting, by 2028 the agency will introduce the first generation of fail-resistant quantum systems. The device will be located in one of the ten national laboratories of the Ministry, but other details are not revealed.
Yale University physicist Stephen Girvin called the three-year term "a very optimistic but worthy goal." According to him, the researchers have made significant progress in correcting quantum errors, but full fault tolerance is still a long way off. The Ministry of Energy, with an annual budget of $8.4 billion, is the largest funder of physical science in the US.
