September 2026 was the worst month in the field of cryptocurrency hacker attacks with total losses exceeding 768 million dollars, according to estimates by two blockchain security companies. According to PeckShield, there were 55 major incidents during the month, resulting in thefts amounting to 766.5 million dollars. CertiK, in turn, recorded 97 incidents and estimates losses at 768.4 million dollars. Both reports confirm that these figures represent a significant increase compared to August. The largest incidents of the month were the hack on the Bitget platform, which cost 388 million dollars, and the Liquid Network hack amounting to 320 million dollars, of which more than 270 million dollars were returned, according to available data. These incidents are among the largest cryptocurrency thefts of 2026. “September was a stark reminder of how quickly the threat in this area can change,” – noted a CertiK representative in their statement.
Additionally, in September, there were other attacks, including incidents with Safe Wallet, DCENT, and Duelbits, which incurred losses of 7.8 million, 6 million, and 5.9 million dollars respectively. In total, according to CertiK, 656 security incidents were recorded in 2026, leading to total losses of 2.68 billion dollars. These figures highlight the ongoing vulnerability of the cryptocurrency space to hackers. The relevance of this issue is also confirmed by the fact that many users are increasingly forced to reconsider their data protection methods.
The financial consequences of hacker attacks are tangible and can lead to long-term impacts on trust in cryptocurrencies as such. The incidents that occurred in September raise concerns among investors and users, as they highlight the ease with which attackers can carry out attacks on secure platforms. Thus, the increasing statistics of incidents necessitate enhanced security measures and adequate responses from all market players.
