Zcash Launches NU7 Update with New Features and Changes

The Zcash Foundation announced the release of Zebra 7.0.0-rc.0, the first release candidate for the NU7 network update. The update is expected to be activated on the testnet on October 6, 2026, while the activation height for the mainnet will be determined on October 20, 2026. NU7 includes a significant reduction in block confirmation time: from 75 seconds to 25 seconds. This improvement aims to eliminate barriers for transactions at points of sale and transfers between exchanges. Now Zcash users will wait only 25 seconds for the first confirmation, significantly speeding up the exchange and transaction process.

In addition to reducing wait times, the NU7 update introduces new limits on shielded transactions to prevent wallet spam. Under ZIP 235, 60% of all block transaction fees will be removed from circulation and accounted for in a reserve, while the remaining 40% will be received by miners. This will make it profitable for miners to continue including transactions, ensuring network sustainability. The NU7 update also introduces operation limits: 330 Orchard or Ironwood operations, 300 Sapling inputs and outputs, and an overall budget of 330 for all pools. Meanwhile, the traditional four-year block reward halving schedule and the maximum coin limit of 21 million ZEC will be maintained. As part of this update, the Zcash network is preparing for changes in the security funding model, which will ensure operational efficiency and address future challenges.

Thus, expectations are tied to two key dates: the first activation on the testnet will occur on October 6, 2026, and then on the mainnet on October 20, 2026. NU7 not only improves transaction processing speed but also updates reward distribution mechanisms and enhances network security, making Zcash more resilient in the long term. Currently, with the average wait time for the first confirmation in Zcash being 75 seconds, this was considered a real barrier for users at points of sale and transfers between different platforms. Under ZIP 218, NU7 reduces the target time between blocks to 25 seconds, which will truly change the accessibility and attractiveness of Zcash for active use.
