Zcash Is 3.5 Times More Volatile Than Bitcoin Despite Smaller Market Cap

Zcash is demonstrating extraordinary volatility relative to its modest market size. The privacy-focused cryptocurrency represents just 1% of Bitcoin's market capitalization, yet its price fluctuates three and a half times more sharply. Over the past month, Zcash has surged 142%, reaching $1,236, extending an impressive annual gain of more than 2,360% that propelled the asset from 82nd to 10th place among the largest cryptocurrencies.

According to Zach Pandl, Head of Research at Grayscale, this contrasting dynamic creates unique opportunities for options strategies. While Bitcoin posted average annualized volatility of around 40% over the past year — comparable to large-cap tech stocks — Zcash is exhibiting volatility of approximately 140% annualized. This gap opens the door to substantially higher returns: a hypothetical covered call strategy on Zcash could generate premiums equivalent to 70% annual yield, whereas a similar strategy on Bitcoin delivers only around 30%. However, elevated returns come with elevated risks: if the asset's price falls by more than the premium received, the investor can incur losses. For more predictable outcomes, Pandl recommends structured options constructs such as long calls or puts.

The surge in interest in Zcash coincides with growing concerns about the impact of artificial intelligence on financial privacy. Pandl has previously flagged the risk that AI could make it easier to identify individuals by their blockchain addresses and drive demand for more robust privacy tools. Zcash allows users to conduct shielded transactions that conceal both participant addresses and transferred amounts, in contrast to Bitcoin's publicly visible transactions. Grayscale believes this functionality could become increasingly sought after as concerns over financial privacy continue to grow. Zcash currently controls 62% of the combined market capitalization of the privacy coins sector.
