Acurast deployed the open AI solution Laya on its decentralized network of smartphones, allowing the model to make real-time decisions on Android devices instead of centralized data centers.

According to the company, over 280,000 smartphones from more than 175 countries have already joined the network. Laya, developed by Convai Innovations under the Apache 2.0 license, is designed for making structured decisions rather than generating conversational text. The model takes a given state and a set of possible actions, processes the input, and selects one of the options. The decision-making process takes between 0.2 and 1 second and is performed using smartphone processors without specialized GPUs.

Acurast allows Laya to handle workloads including classification, gaming, navigation, security, and content moderation. The company claims that each decision is made on the smartphone with network connectivity, demonstrating how such workloads can operate on standard mobile hardware. According to Acurast founder Alessandro De Carli, "by using Laya on Acurast, we have changed the approach." The model can now handle tasks on smartphones, providing an open and decentralized approach to cloud solutions. The Laya model has already been tested in various types of tasks. For example, in gaming, Laya was used for playing Snake and Tetris, making decisions about movements and the placement of falling pieces. In other tests, the model can classify emails as inbox messages, spam, or phishing attempts, as well as sort headlines into categories such as news, satire, and clickbait.
