Shares of American Airlines, the largest US airline, soared during recent trading. The company's share price jumped more than seven percent immediately after the official announcement of a major upgrade of its onboard systems. The company's management made a strategic decision to dramatically improve the quality of service for its customers by implementing advanced space technologies.

According to the published plan, the airline plans to equip approximately 500 of its mainline Airbus aircraft, including the latest A321neo models, with the high-speed Starlink satellite internet system from Elon Musk's SpaceX. The first technical work on integrating the new equipment will begin as early as next calendar year. It's worth noting that the spring tender previously included a competitive bidding process, and the carrier seriously considered an alternative proposal, the Leo system from tech giant Amazon. However, current contracts with providers Viasat and Panasonic, which service Boeing aircraft, will remain in effect for now.

This move is consistent with a global trend of large-scale upgrades to in-flight digital infrastructure, which has unfolded among key players in the aviation market. Companies are fiercely competing to attract a premium and affluent audience, replacing outdated and slow Wi-Fi with ultra-fast connections. Meanwhile, the Starlink project is demonstrating impressive financial results, accounting for over 60 percent of Elon Musk's total revenue for his space empire. This success is particularly significant given SpaceX's upcoming IPO on Nasdaq in June, which has the potential to become the largest stock listing in global history.

Despite the current positive momentum and moderately optimistic forecasts from Wall Street analysts, American Airlines faces significant work to restore its market position, as its market capitalization has declined by four percent since the beginning of the year. The consensus among experts currently appears balanced, dividing most observers into the camp of active buyers and those taking a wait-and-see approach. However, the introduction of modern satellite technologies could become a powerful driver for long-term growth and increased passenger loyalty.
