On September 14, BabyDoge announced the acquisition of LimeWire, directing the platform towards creating opportunities for content creators and utilizing decentralized storage. The financial terms of the deal were not disclosed, and the new leadership is headed by Abel Chupor, who replaced brothers Julian and Paul Zetmayr, who had been focused on revitalizing the brand for the past five years. LimeWire plans to focus on using the LMWR token for decentralized storage services and access to AI-based tools.
Under the new leadership, LimeWire will evolve as a platform focused on the creativity and ownership of creators. Chupor criticized the large tech industry for controlling the works and data of creators, stating: "We are building a platform where AI serves the creator, not the corporation." LimeWire currently reaches 8 million users per month, while the BabyDoge ecosystem boasts over 3 million users. Chupor noted that BabyDoge's approach to LimeWire implies support for a "DAO-style," where the independence of the platform is prioritized.
At its launch in 2022, LimeWire aimed to create an NFT marketplace but has since shifted its focus to decentralized storage services and AI-based content tools. The current LMWR token, originally intended for NFTs, will now be used within the LimeWire ecosystem for payments and access to tools. As a result of the acquisition, LimeWire will continue to operate based on its previous plans, providing access to innovative solutions for content creators. The Zetmayr brothers spent five years revitalizing the LimeWire brand after its relaunch aimed at transforming the former P2P service into an NFT marketplace. Now, the enhanced infrastructure of LimeWire will be utilized for a broader audience, marking a new phase in the service's development under Chupor's leadership and with the support of BabyDoge.
