Spot Bitcoin ETFs traded in the US attracted over $1 billion this week – according to SoSoValue, $1.08 billion. Analysts call this a sign of renewed institutional demand but warn: for Bitcoin's growth to become sustainable, inflows must remain strong.
"Institutional demand shows timid improvement. However, flows remain volatile, and sustained inflows are needed to confirm a stronger recovery," said Vikram Subburaj, CEO of India's Giottus, in a letter.
History partly supports this. Steep rises in Bitcoin (growth of more than 50% without a drop of more than 20% from the peak) were accompanied by average daily inflows exceeding $200 million. Since the launch of the funds in January 2024, there have been three such rallies.
The first – from January 23 to March 14, 2024: Bitcoin rose by 79%, from ~$39,900 to $71,400. Funds received an average of $294 million per day, with 10 days yielding $500 million+ and one day $1 billion+.
The second – from August 5 to December 17, 2024: a rise of 96%, from ~$54,100 to $106,100, averaging $202 million per day, 16 days with $500 million+ and three days with $1 billion+.
The third – from April 6 to July 14, 2025: a rise of 53%, from ~$78,400 to $119,900, averaging $248 million per day, 13 days with $500 million+ and two days with $1 billion+.
Over these 199 trading days, the funds attracted $46.7 billion – averaging about $235 million per day; 39 days yielded $500 million+ and six days $1 billion+.
Currently, the pace is slower. Since July 1, 2025, Bitcoin has risen by 39%, from ~$60,000 to $83,500. During this time, the funds showed seven days with $500 million+ – roughly one in 11 trading days compared to one in five during the three rallies. The average of $86 million per day is noticeably below $200 million+, and there hasn't been a single day with $1 billion+.
So, if history is a guide, a steady flow of inflows is needed for a new steep rise. However, the past is a guide, not a promise. Demand through other channels — via futures or direct token purchases on the spot market — can also boost the price.
