Bitcoin Market: Risks of a Second Consecutive Red October

Bitcoin risks becoming a victim of another red October: as of October 19, its monthly performance is -1.35%, whereas historically October has averaged 18.40%. This comes after a September increase of 6.33%, suggesting that the momentum gained during the recovery period appears to be fading. Broad market uncertainty and profit-taking may have contributed to the decline, but monthly returns alone do not provide clear reasons. The June drop of 20.48% demonstrated how quickly sell-offs can overshadow recovery attempts, while the August rebound of 24.95% highlighted the market's volatility.

Two consecutive negative Octobers could undermine investor confidence, considering that Bitcoin is already down for the month. This affects seasonal rallies and increases the likelihood that investors will require more reliable confirmation before buying. Additionally, a general decrease in risk appetite could negatively impact altcoins. For a sustainable recovery, Bitcoin needs renewed spot demand and greater buyer confidence.

Meanwhile, on-chain data shows a growing gap between retail investors and whales: retail is selling more actively than large holders are buying. According to CryptoQuant, retail deposits on Binance have increased from $7 billion to $10.78 billion over the past 30 days—a 54% rise. Whale inflows during the same period increased by only 9.5% to $4.6 billion. The gap has grown from $2.8 billion to $6.18 billion: retail is offloading coins much faster than whales are accumulating them.

However, whale behavior presents a contrasting picture. From September 27 to October 19, the distribution trend among holders of 1,000–10,000 BTC reversed: the distribution volume fell from 62,600 to 5,230 BTC, indicating a shift to accumulation. The cohort holding 100–1,000 BTC has been accumulating since mid-July, despite a balance decrease of 75,000 BTC.

Together, these trends indicate that whales are behaving much more steadily than retail investors. If they continue to accumulate, they could act as a buffer against future selling pressure. However, further retail deposits could limit short-term price growth.
