Circle Foundation Issues First Grants in the U.S. for AI Technologies

Circle Foundation issued its first grants in the U.S. on September 22, supporting Accion Opportunity Fund and Pacific Community Ventures. The announcement was made at the annual Clinton Global Initiative meeting in New York City. Both organizations are Community Development Financial Institutions (CDFI) serving small business owners who struggle to obtain financing through traditional channels. The grants are aimed at developing artificial intelligence-based technologies for lending and data analysis. Circle did not disclose the amount of the grants.

Accion Opportunity Fund will use the funds to launch Credit Compass 2.0 – a tool that provides personalized financial education based on data from credit applications. According to Accion, applicants using these educational resources are 84% more likely to receive loan approval. Circle has not published the sample size, methodology, or independent assessment of this outcome. Luz Urrutia, CEO of Accion Opportunity Fund, noted that the product is designed to give business owners "a clear and honest picture of where they stand." Elizabeth Carpenter, head of strategic engagement at Circle Internet Group, added that Credit Compass 2.0 "provides small business owners with a real roadmap to capital."

The grant to Pacific Community Ventures will be directed towards Radiant Data Hub – a platform for data management and evaluation of credit programs for socially-oriented organizations. The project includes predictive analytics and data management tools to help lending institutions analyze the outcomes of their programs. PCV President Bulbul Gupta emphasized that the organization intends to keep "human intelligence and community impact at the center" as it expands the use of AI.
