Cryptocurrency Liquidations: Nearly $1 Billion Lost

Nearly $1 billion in cryptocurrency bets were liquidated over the past day due to falling prices of Bitcoin, Ether, and XRP. Of this volume, approximately $483 million were liquidations of Bitcoin and Ether futures positions, which occurred amid uncertainty regarding the Federal Reserve's next interest rate decision. Ether was one of the most affected cryptocurrencies, suffering losses of about $286 million as it fell more than 6% to around $2,350. According to CoinGlass, Bitcoin positions were liquidated for about $197 million. Bitcoin fell approximately 3.2% and is trading around $81,000. Ether liquidations accounted for roughly 60% of the total liquidated positions.

In addition to Bitcoin and Ether, losses also affected smaller tokens such as Solana, Dogecoin, and Zcash. Solana futures positions reached approximately $31 million in liquidations, while SOL fell by 5.5%. Zcash contracts recorded nearly $19 million in liquidations, with ZEC losing about 13%. Liquidations occur when traders use borrowed funds, and price movements leave them without sufficient collateral to maintain open positions. Closing such positions can increase pressure on a falling market, forcing traders to exit regardless of their willingness to sell at that price. This creates additional price fluctuations that can worsen the market's overall condition.

The total volume of open contracts for Ether is about $30 billion, compared to $52 billion for Bitcoin. These figures reflect the value of closed positions, not the personal losses of traders.
