Chinese chip manufacturer CXMT is preparing to enter the flash memory market, according to Reuters citing three sources. They report that the company plans to create a pilot production line for NAND memory at a new factory in Beijing. A research institute has also been opened there, one of its focuses being the development of NAND.
CXMT (officially ChangXin Memory Technologies) has already discussed plans with potential clients, including a recently established startup that intends to purchase NAND for AI-based storage systems and supercomputers. Reuters does not disclose the name of the client.
Currently, CXMT specializes in DRAM. Entering the NAND market signifies a shift in strategy for the company and direct competition with domestic player YMTC in one of the fastest-growing sectors of the semiconductor industry. Additionally, CXMT will compete with Samsung Electronics and other international manufacturers that dominate this market. High demand from AI servers has triggered a global memory shortage that may persist until the end of 2027. Major manufacturers are refocusing on producing high-margin DRAM for AI applications, further exacerbating the shortage of flash memory.
