Mining companies are actively expanding their own energy capacities amid growing demand. The Zcash-focused Fortitude Mining company recently acquired a new facility. A specialized 12.5 MW site is located in the U.S. state of Nebraska. The deal includes a land plot, a building and a 67 kV substation. The company's net cash expenses amounted to approximately $4.7 million. The company's total portfolio now exceeds 60 MW of contract capacity. The cost of electricity at the new site is estimated at 4.5 cents. Cheap capacities will help reduce the cost of mining coins to forty dollars. Earlier, the company also purchased nine thousand modern miners from Bitmain. The new equipment will add about 7.56 GSol/s of computing power to the network.
At the same time, competition for connection to the local power grid is intensifying in Texas. The relevant Texas commissions conduct a thorough audit of new data centers. Approval of such infrastructure projects has been temporarily suspended until the audit is completed. The local operator ERCOT is currently monitoring more than 1,800 connection requests. The total requested capacity of all applicants exceeds 474 gigawatts. About ninety percent of new requests come from data center operators. Regulators strive to protect the safety and stable quality of life of residents. Projects that do not meet strict requirements will receive a guaranteed rejection. This moratorium creates additional barriers to entry for new entrants.
Bernstein analysts have studied in detail the impact of the Texas moratorium on the industry. Experts believe that the restrictions will not affect already approved energy contracts. The new rules are more likely to increase the market value of the existing agreed sites. Analysts have identified the IREN infrastructure as one of these preferred facilities. Other companies may face resistance in expanding their capacity. The largest players continue to invest in the development of regional computing infrastructure. MARA Holdings recently bought a site in Matagorda County. The total amount of this large-scale deal could reach six hundred million. Hut 8 has also signed a long-term lease agreement for the campus. The fifteen-year lease agreement for the complex amounted to 9.8 billion.
