Glamsterdam Update on Ethereum Testnet Delayed

Ethereum developers have postponed the Glamsterdam update on the Hoodi test network due to security risks identified by researchers concerning smart contract compatibility. The update was initially planned for October 26, 2026. The decision to cancel was made during the All Core Devs Execution meeting to further examine the interaction of gas accounting changes proposed in EIP-8037 with smart contracts already deployed on the main network. The increase in the gas limit to 200 million was also canceled without altering the Hoodi blockchain history.

A security analysis conducted by ChainSecurity indicated that the proposed changes could affect how existing smart contracts handle failed transactions and retry mechanisms. Specifically, ChainSecurity warned that changes in gas accounting rules might allow some operations, which previously failed, to continue processing contracts. This, in turn, could complicate the actions needed to correct an error. However, the researchers demonstrated the mechanism but did not publicly confirm that any major production protocol is vulnerable.

Hoodi nodes must now update their execution and consensus client software to exclude the planned activation on October 26. The Ethereum Foundation has not provided a new date for the activation of Hoodi or the main network, leaving December plans in question. Christine D. Kim from the Ethereum Foundation urged node operators to follow the new instructions.
