Global exchange-traded funds backed by physical gold attracted $30.7 billion in the third quarter of 2026. This is the largest quarterly inflow in history.
Analysts from The Kobeissi Letter cited data from the World Gold Council (WGC). According to their assessment, the demand for the precious metal is currently exceptionally high, and the funds' reserves have reached a historic high.
Funds' reserves exceeded the February record
The September inflow into gold ETFs amounted to $10 billion – the third-largest monthly figure in 2026. Funds received $17.9 billion in August, marking the second-best month in the history of observations.
The total metal reserves in ETFs increased by 67 tons in September, reaching 4,256 tons. The previous record of 4,176 tons was set in February.
Gold ETFs have attracted $38.5 billion since the beginning of the year, with their reserves increasing by 226 tons during this time. A net inflow was recorded in all regions. This outcome was achieved despite significant outflows in March and June – $11.7 billion and $9.2 billion, respectively.
Funds traded on UK exchanges received $9.5 billion during the same period, surpassing China. The UK became the largest source of demand among individual countries in 2026.
Who else is buying and selling gold
Funds are purchasing metal even during declines. According to Global Markets Investor, the reserves of gold ETFs in the sample reached 100.9 million ounces – the highest since August 2022. Meanwhile, gold has decreased in price by 4.2% since the beginning of the year, but investors are not exiting positions; instead, they are increasing them.
