Google, through its Debug project, plans to release 32 million male mosquitoes in the U.S. to reduce the threat of malaria and other mosquito-borne diseases. The releases will occur in two waves of 16 million insects each in California and Florida. Importantly, only male mosquitoes will be released; they do not bite or transmit disease. Infected with Wolbachia, any eggs fertilized by these males will not hatch, gradually reducing the population of harmful mosquitoes.

The method is entirely natural, with no chemicals, toxins or genetic modifications involved. AI is used to sort males from females and control release numbers and locations. The Debug program was successfully piloted in Singapore, where releasing 6–10 million males per week reduced dengue cases by 70% within 6–12 months.

This marks one of the first large-scale U.S. deployments of such a program. Debug combines engineering and biological expertise to show how technology and AI can safely address major global public health challenges.
