Nvidia Invests $3.5 Billion in Taiwan's MediaTek

Nvidia is investing $3.5 billion in MediaTek. The American chipmaker will acquire convertible bonds issued by the Taiwanese company. This marks Nvidia's largest direct investment outside the United States. Bloomberg reports on the deal. The transaction significantly expands the long-standing partnership between the two companies. The Taiwanese developer will leverage Nvidia's NVLink Fusion and NVHBM technologies. These will ensure seamless communication between components in data centers.

MediaTek helps data center operators build their own custom components. The Taiwanese developer competes with major market players, including Broadcom and Marvell Technology. Nvidia and MediaTek will also jointly develop new platforms. The partners are integrating artificial intelligence into personal computers. The automotive segment will likewise become a priority area of cooperation.

Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang commented on the deal, describing the partnership as a large-scale technological convergence between the two companies. The roadmap envisions a ten-year collaboration. MediaTek is seeking to reduce its dependence on the smartphone market and is strengthening its reputation as a server chip developer. Earlier this year, MediaTek entered into a partnership with Apple. The Taiwanese company's market capitalization has grown approximately threefold, reaching $197.74 billion as of August 31.

Nvidia is actively investing in clients and partners in the AI space. Investors have expressed concerns about the self-contained nature of such sector investments. Jensen Huang dismissed these concerns, arguing that each company has its own independent business. Management views the investments as a way to accelerate the adoption of its technologies. Nvidia remains the primary beneficiary of data center spending. MediaTek forecasts significant growth in chip sales, with revenue from AI components projected to reach $2 billion. By 2027, MediaTek expects to capture fifteen percent of the market, a segment estimated at $80 billion in total.
