Xaman Wallet: Growth Requires Improvement in Blockchain Infrastructure

Xaman, a self-custodial wallet formerly known as Xumm, has grown so rapidly that it has created a real infrastructure issue for the XRP Ledger. A fix is being prepared to address the load created by the growing number of wallet accounts on the network nodes' bandwidth.

Xaman is developed by XRPL Labs and serves as the primary self-managed mobile gateway to the XRP Ledger and Xahau networks. It allows users to create and manage accounts, perform transactions, set up trust lines, trade on the built-in decentralized exchange, and interact with non-fungible tokens. Private keys are stored entirely on the device, ensuring users always retain full control over their funds.

The growth has been significant: an annual review showed about 735,000 active users – a 45.8% increase from the previous period. Separate metrics for 2024 estimated the number of active users above 600,000, and the platform has recorded hundreds of millions of internal interactions over its lifetime. Each new account requires activation in the ledger itself, and maintaining it requires a base reserve of 1 XRP.

The problem is that such a volume of accounts now hits the limits of efficient processing on some network nodes. The upcoming fix is directly aimed at this limitation and is intended to ensure that the network infrastructure aligns with the growing user base of the most popular wallet.

The XRP Ledger network operates a protocol change management mechanism – the amendment process. Amendments require a supermajority of validator votes before activation. One of them, BatchV1_1, may activate by the end of September 2026, but it addresses a different issue – a vulnerability identified before the main network launch – and is not related to the volume of accounts or node load from Xaman's growth. The fix for Xaman appears to be a more targeted response – possibly outside the formal amendment process or on an accelerated schedule.
