Losses from Hacker Attacks Reached $6.48 Billion in October – 745% Increase from September

In October 2026, the crypto industry experienced 56 major hacking attacks, resulting in losses of $6.48 billion. This is approximately 745% higher than the September figure of $766.49 million, according to analysts at PeckShieldAlert.

The main reason for the sharp increase in losses was the hack of Binance, with losses estimated at around $6.3 billion. This incident ranks as the largest cryptocurrency theft of the year. The market's swift reaction and the freezing of over $3 billion in stablecoins significantly limited the losses, and the exchange focused on using its own reserves to cover them.

Major attacks of the year

In second place is the attack on Bitget, which resulted in $387.5 million being drained from the exchange's hot and warm wallets across several blockchains. The platform's private keys remained intact, and the exchange promptly covered all client losses using its own protection fund, subsequently replenishing it to $300 million.

Rounding out the top three is the September incident with Liquid Network: due to a software error in Elements, hackers managed to withdraw 4000 BTC (about $320 million). Network operators immediately suspended bridge operations, after which negotiations led to the return of $285 million by the perpetrators.

The top ten largest attacks of 2026 as of October 31 also include: Drift – $292 million, KelpDAO and LayerZero – $285 million, COLDCARD Wallet – $130 million, CryptoBills Ledger drainer – $93 million, Tectonic Finance – $74 million, Humanity Protocol – $31 million, Step Finance – $28.9 million.

Total losses

According to PeckShieldAlert, the combined losses from the ten largest attacks as of October 31 accounted for 92.3% of the total damage to the crypto industry for the year – before accounting for frozen and returned funds. Analysts estimated the total losses since the beginning of 2026 at $8.6 billion.
