Meta is developing a new model of smart glasses codenamed Luna, which could go on sale as early as October. Unlike Ray-Ban Meta, the device will not have a camera. According to sources familiar with the company's plans, the management of AI functions will be built around voice interaction.
To communicate with Meta AI and the personal agent Muse, six microphones will be integrated into the frame. The assistant will be activated by a button on the temple, and speakers similar to those used in current models will be provided for sound playback. The temples will be made thinner. Currently, Meta is considering at least two design options – Clubmaster and Burbank. The official presentation may take place on September 23-24 at the Meta Connect conference.
The decision to forgo a camera comes amid discussions about the privacy of Ray-Ban Meta. Earlier this year, media reported instances where people were filmed without their knowledge, and the recordings were later published on social media. Meta has previously strengthened the protection of the recording indicator and announced automatic camera shutdown when attempts are made to hide or damage the light signal. At the same time, complaints about the devices have arisen from authorities and human rights organizations in several countries. The new model without a camera allows the company to retain voice AI functions while eliminating one of the main sources of such complaints.
