MetaMask Implements New Wallet Protection Features Against Crypto Fraud

The MetaMask wallet has announced new protection features aimed at preventing cryptocurrency fraud. Among the updates are alerts for similar addresses, investment and romance scams, as well as simplified transaction screens that will be available in both the mobile app and the browser version.

The "Additional Protection" feature automatically reverses transactions that do not match their previews. Initially, it will launch in the browser extension and will later become available on mobile devices. Martin Peko, MetaMask's product manager, noted that users often ignore fraud warnings, trusting recipients or receiving recommendations to proceed with transactions. This prompted the team to consider implementing controls that would allow users to contact a support representative in case of doubts. Peko also added that MetaMask uses artificial intelligence technologies to detect fraud-related threats, which is part of a broader trend to update security systems.

These updates will be beneficial amid actions by authorities against services supporting investment and romance scam schemes. In July, U.S. law enforcement seized over $25 million in cryptocurrency linked to such schemes, and earlier this month, the Secret Service froze $52.8 million in cryptocurrency related to the Xinbi Guarantee market, which provides services to scammers. The new features also align with Consensys's plans to separate its institutional and consumer businesses by the end of 2026. The technological solutions used to enhance security include analyzing unstructured content on social media and websites, which, according to Peko, should significantly increase user awareness of potential threats.
