Metaplanet has increased its bitcoin reserves to 44,000 BTC, becoming the second largest corporate holder after selling 10,000 BTC and purchasing 11,000 BTC in the third quarter of 2026. According to recent company statements, the sale of 10,000 BTC generated ¥124.7 billion (approximately $790 million), which was temporarily held in cash. Subsequently, Metaplanet acquired 11,000 BTC for nearly ¥150 billion, increasing its reserves by 1,000 BTC. This transaction was designed to demonstrate the liquidity of large bitcoin reserves to credit rating assessors and fixed-income investors.
This move demonstrated the company's ability to convert its assets into cash if necessary. The funds raised exceeded about ¥122.4 billion of its net debt. This amount is related to its bond obligations and other associated liabilities. However, these debts were not repaid but used to instill confidence in investors regarding Metaplanet's ability to manage its obligations effectively. It is worth noting that the company sold BTC at slightly lower prices, leading to the need to repurchase reserves at higher levels and likely creating a deferred tax asset of approximately $97 million, although this information remains preliminary and unaudited.
Metaplanet is actively increasing its market positions. In addition to recent transactions, the company invested 2,100 BTC and $2.5 million in a transfer from Super League Enterprise to Superplanet, a platform for bitcoin treasury in the US. These steps support its ambitions to expand market influence and demonstrate the stability of its financial assets. As of September 30, 2026, the company's total reserves amount to 44,000 BTC, highlighting its serious intentions in the field of corporate investments in bitcoin and digital assets.
