In the coming days, the high-gain antenna will be deployed. The aperture cover will also open. Ground services will then perform a trajectory correction. The mission's key feature is its wide field of view. Infrared optics complement the Wide Field Instrument. The main camera will be activated in a few weeks. It has 300 megapixels and eighteen detectors.
The primary mirror has a diameter of 2.4 meters — the same size as the Hubble telescope. The working range extends from 0.48 to 2.30 microns. The observatory's launch mass is approximately 10,500 kilograms. The power system delivers 4.5 kilowatts. Scientific data is transmitted at a rate of 290 megabits per second. The planned operational lifespan is five years. The rigid structure allows continuous sky scanning without pauses. The survey progresses one thousand times faster than Hubble. The daily data flow will reach 1.4 terabytes. This is a record for NASA astrophysics missions. Machine learning and volunteers will help process the data array.
The coronagraph will be activated in the coming days. The instrument is being tested for direct imaging of exoplanets. The technology will prove useful for the Habitable Worlds Observatory project. The telescope will capture images of Jupiter-sized planets. Senior scientist Julie McEnery commented on the launch. She noted the unique new perspective on the Universe it provides.
