NextEra Energy Announces 35 GW Project for AI

NextEra Energy has announced a project reserve of 35.1 GW in renewable energy and storage as of the second quarter of 2026. This scale is comparable to the energy sufficient to power approximately 26 million homes. The primary driving force has been clients in hyperscale computing, who require energy levels that did not exist a few years ago. The company is no longer just building wind farms for the grid but is creating energy infrastructure for data centers serving AI.

NextEra Energy Resources, the energy subsidiary of the company, has launched an initiative to create "data center hubs." The baseline goal is to achieve at least 15 GW of new generating capacity for these hubs by 2035, with an optimistic scenario more than doubling that figure to over 30 GW. According to management, around 30 potential locations are currently under discussion, with plans to expand that number to 40 by the end of 2026. About 30% of recent additions to the portfolio have come directly from hyperscalers, including partnerships with Google and Meta.

CEO John Ketchum noted the shift in customer requests: from traditional project sizes to multi-gigawatt capacities, with a demand for faster delivery. The addition of 3.6 GW to the portfolio in the second quarter of 2026 marked the second-largest quarterly addition in the company's history.
