CSD BR and Ripple have partnered to use blockchain technology in Brazil's financial infrastructure, which is valued at $22 trillion. Initially, the project will focus on investment fund shares from BTG Pactual bank. Under the new approach, assets will be tokenized and recorded on the XRP Ledger. In the first phase, the XRP Ledger will be used for recording and auditing financial assets. The blockchain will not replace the existing CSD BR infrastructure but will provide an additional method for verifying and auditing asset records. Authorized participants will be able to verify records on the blockchain in real-time, which is expected to improve transparency and traceability. Additionally, this could enhance automation and efficiency in financial market processes. The system will operate on a permissioned basis, with access limited to eligible corporate and banking clients in Brazil. Participants will also need to comply with KYC and AML requirements.
CSD BR will retain control over the issuance and management of assets and will perform key governance functions such as authorizing participants, freezing individual assets, and canceling transactions at the request of regulators or courts. Ripple's security infrastructure will be integrated with the native capabilities of the XRP Ledger, creating an environment where tokenized financial assets are processed in accordance with existing regulatory requirements.
Future plans include expansion beyond the initial rollout phase. Both partners intend to assess the use of blockchain for issuing and trading native assets among authorized participants. Potential new assets may include certificates for real estate (CRI) and agribusiness (CRA) trade loans, which play a significant role in Brazil's fixed income market. Plans also include adding more robust privacy features. Silvio Pegado, Ripple's Managing Director for Latin America, noted, "Transitioning from pilot projects and proof of concept to infrastructure for record-keeping in the national capital market is a significant milestone for the entire industry."
