Solana Founder Highlights Link Between AI Development Slowdown and Billion-Dollar Valuations

The founder of the Solana blockchain, Anatoly Yakovenko, responded to the call from leading figures in the AI industry to slow down the development of neural networks. In a recent joint statement, the heads of companies Anthropic (Dario Amodei), OpenAI (Sam Altman), and xAI (Elon Musk) proposed to halt progress due to safety concerns. Yakovenko sarcastically commented on this statement, pointing out that the real reason lies in the desire of major players to maintain their trillion-dollar valuations: "Profitability at a $1 trillion valuation." He also added that he told his Codex to use tokens more sparingly, openly mocking calls for artificial slowing down.

In his critique, Yakovenko notes that OpenAI and Anthropic have effectively reached the limits of their infrastructure. Due to rising costs of chips and electricity, these companies are compelled to demonstrate real profits instead of endlessly burning through their budgets. David Sacks, a former advisor on AI and cryptocurrency, also joined the discussion, pointing out the blatant hypocrisy from the labs. He argues that if OpenAI and Anthropic truly saw a deadly threat in their new developments, they could simply cease their operations without the need to lobby for laws across the entire industry.

At the same time, as of the stock market opening on Monday, there has been no sign of panic in the market. There is an opinion that a possible slowdown in the development of advanced models will not lead to a decrease in investments in AI infrastructure, but rather stretch out the cycles of equipment procurement. In such conditions, the initiative for regulation from major players creates an artificial duopoly, threatening startups and open-source projects.
