Solana Scheduled Alpenglow Update for October 21

Solana has scheduled the Alpenglow upgrade for October 21. It aims for settlement finality in approximately 150 milliseconds, although actual performance will depend on network conditions. The update will replace the TowerBFT validator voting system and move their votes off-chain. This could dramatically change the number of Solana transactions without reflecting a decrease in user activity.

Currently, a payment in Solana can appear successful almost instantly, but Alpenglow will provide a more reliable guarantee that a transaction cannot be reversed almost as quickly. A seller waiting for such a guarantee before accepting payment, or a bridge before releasing funds on another blockchain, will be able to act sooner.

Currently, validators cast votes as transactions recorded on the blockchain. Alpenglow will allow votes to be exchanged directly and approvals to be combined into a certificate finalizing a block after one or two rounds of voting. On the day of activation, an unexpected effect may occur: the number of transactions could drop sharply due to the disappearance of validator votes from blocks, even if users continue to transact at the same pace.

Operators need software based on Agave 4.3.0. Firedancer and Frankendancer will not support the initial migration, so their operators will have to switch temporarily. The current voting fee—about 1 SOL per epoch—will disappear, replaced by a fixed fee of 0.8 SOL.

The migration is scheduled for epoch 1064, expected to begin around 15:00 UTC on October 21. Solana will continue to use the old voting system for the first 5,000 slots before switching to Alpenglow approximately 18 minutes later.
